We moved here 2 years ago after living in NY for 15 years. We are enjoying our new town and all it has to offer. Brenda Bryan - November 21st, 2004 at 12:14pm Long strange trip Remember hanging at Orchard park and the cops would chase us out at 10 pm. It was like a game every summer evening. Would love to hear from anyone who was there in the 60's and 70's, even some of the cops who I actually got a laugh trying to cut off all our escape roots. Oh the good old days in Maplewood. Neil Meharg - November 16th, 2004 at 10:32am Site is alot of fun! Was looking for an article in a maplewood paper, & got on this site by accident. I enjoyed it very much! It was so nice to read about old friends & classmates. Especialy the ones that you often say, "what ever happened to her/him? If any one ever knows what happened to Carrie McMullen. I may have spelled her name incorrectly. She graduated in 88 or 89. Had an older brother John. They lived by Maplewood Pool & were both real blond. Carrie was a doll. Theresa Jones - October 5th, 2004 at 09:43am Do you remember the Calsibets? I'm looking for old friends and neighbors who remember the Calsibets (I am one) who lived first on Pierson Road, then on Clinton Avenue in Maplewood. My sisters and I grew up there and our family moved away from Maplewood in 1965. If you remember us, I'm sure one of us will remember you! Please be in touch. Barbara Calsibet - September 30th, 2004 at 12:06pm A Great Place It has been over 30 years since I moved away and I still miss Maplewood. I grew up there at 90 Hudson Ave. My family lived in that house from around 1936 until 1995. Great memories of Maplewood, South Orange and South Mountain Reservation. Going to the duck pond in S.O. to feed the ducks, feeding the deer up in the Reservation. Camping out there with the Scouts or just having a family picnic there. There will never be another place like Grunings. Graduated from OLS in '60, SHP in '64, and SHU in '68. Loved walking around town, through neighborhoods, and yes through your backyards. Those were the days when kids could still just be kids. I lived in Maplewood with my brother and parents in the fifties and early sixties. I went to St.Joseph's school-graduated in 1960 - and then graduated in 1968 from Marymount College in Tarrytown, NY. My parents owned and operated the Crestmont Delicatessen at the corner of Prospect St. and Springfield Ave. from 1954 until 1985. Their names were John and Nell Dziurzynski. Dad passed away in 1989 but mom is still going strong and will be turning 89 very shortly. She and my brother,Fred,a CHS grad, class of 1964, are currently living in Far Hills,NJ. I married my Seton Hall University Chemistry teacher and have lived all over the U.S. We have two grown daughters and we now live in Long Valley,NJ. I especially remember the many great times we had ice skating at Maplecrest and Memorial park. Learning to swim at CHS was a joy. We uwsed to pay $.25 cents to get in at 8:00a.m. and for that we would get gray heavy regulation bathing suits and a towel. I remember when the polio shots were first given out at the Municipal Bldg.I also fondly recall the mountains of maple leaves that were piled each fall in the streets and how we would jump and roll in them. There was nothing as great as going all over town on Halloween with "no fear." Please keep up the good work with this website. If anyone remembers the Crestmont Delicatessen and Liquor store and my Mom's famous potato salad and roast beef sandwiches, please e-mail me at ellenewall@hotmail.com,I would love to hear from you! ellen ewall - August 31st, 2004 at 05:26am Wow Wow I havn't been to Maplewood in some time now. Lucy - August 1st, 2004 at 10:37am I'm Back.... In a March post, I said that you can never go back to where you grew up and expect it to be the same place that you remember. Well there is some truth to that, however Maplewood still looks very much the same as it did when I grew up here in the 70's and 80's. I am back here and trying to make a new start again. We'll see how long this visit lasts this time. I have been down this road before, only to move back to Seattle, WA. P.S. Hello Veronica, e-mail me, let's get together! Barbara Clancy - June 24th, 2004 at 08:37pm 29 Sommer Ave I can't believe I found this website, all of my memories rushed back to me - the Huge Diving board at the Pool that I was afraid of, Tuscan School, Columbia High School, Roman Gourmet (nothing beats that), that weird ice cream store that had a lot of pink and flamingos, TJ Marche's, and dozens of other things. With as far as I have travelled since leaving Maplewood I still have never found a place that felt just right. Emily (Weiss) Canibano - June 1st, 2004 at 12:44am 50's and 60's on Madison Avenue I lived at 18 Madison Avenue from when I was 7 years old in 1954 until I was 15 in 1961 I went to Tuscan School from third grade and then Maplewood Junior High. Jimmy Sepulveda - May 6th, 2004 at 12:36am I remember.... I remember living in Maplewood from 1983 to 1991. I came from the West Coast and loved Maplewood. The Jr. Women's Club - the fireworks, the kids, just everything. I miss it...and I miss my friends. It's been so neat to go and look at the pictures again. Someday, I hope to visit. I believe it was a Morris Chusid who lived on Elberta Road who we hired to paint signs on our business in Irvington about twenty years ago. I knew Glen Camche on Elberta Road years before that. Are you Morris' son? Rob Dakelman - April 22nd, 2004 at 08:21pm Way back when... ...seems so long ago (and of course it was), when I rode that stolen shopping cart ('er borrowed, from the old A&P down on Mill Rd. in Irvington) to deliver my papers (Star Ledger) to the denizens of Stuyvesant Village in Irvington. My Mom probably wondered how I managed to burn a hole in each of my sneaker's soles (for steering purposes Mom!) Finally moved west in '80 and never looked back though the nostalgia bug bites a little from time to time. "You CAN never go back" rings true when I make the rare pilgrimage to my roots in Maplewood and the surrounding 'burbs. The memories are there, like the Maplewood Pool's early days, hanging at the Dairy Queen at the bottom of Boyden Avenue, running the 600 in MJHS gym class and being out front for the first 100 yards before reality set in, basketball in the winter at Memorial Park on the frozen asphalt, after which my fingertips would crack and bleed and hurt for days (that's a painful memory). Living in San Diego, we don't see the changing of the seasons as readily and I have fond memories of jumping into those giant piles of leaves we'd rake up in the fall from the trees on our street and diving into those giant snowbanks that the plows would leave after a winter storm. I could really go on with a book's worth of stories about life growing up in Maplewood and the surrounding regions but I'll spare you. I do photography and if you're interested or bored, go to: http://www.pbase.com/camera0bug and spend some time ....and leave a note if you're so inclined. - DC Dan Chusid - April 14th, 2004 at 08:52pm Looking for Verna Coe Rissell Hi, I'm looking for Verna Rissell, she has reaearched the family of John Haywood of PEI and I was wanting to contact her to see if we can put this on line so others can see it. Maplewood in the spring. not many towns prettier that time of year, enjoy! Neil Meharg - April 13th, 2004 at 10:26am Khalaf Remembers Maplewood: a Great Place to Be From Hi all you Maplewoodians! I was know around town as Gig. I grew up on Maplewood Ave. and walked to town for everything and took the train anywhere. What a great place it was to grow up. Hello to my friends from Jefferson and Columbia Class of 1969. I'd like to hear from an old friend, classmate or aquaintance. Greg Khalaf - April 5th, 2004 at 07:11pm Never look back I agree with the previous message, Maplewood has changed. I live in Bridgewater, NJ now and I wouldn't not want to leave here. I have three kids and they love it here at Sunset Lake in Bridgewater. While I have great memories growing up in Maplewood, I would not move back there. I still visit with family and friends though and I walk around Parker Avenue and Courter Avenue. But I love my new home in Bridgewater. Susan Lorig - March 31st, 2004 at 07:55pm Maplewood Never Leaves Us Was The Best Way To Put It The truth is, Maplewood has changed. And as much as I miss it and my memories, you can't go back. Since my time there, I have lived all over the world. At first, I always wanted to move back to Maplewood, but now, as attached and fond I am of my Maplewood memories, I can no longer go back. It's no longer home. It is different. And now I live in the little town of Scotch Plains which I wouldn't want to leave for the world. I have a new happy home. But of all the places I've lived, those Maplewood years...the pool, the village, the parties...were some of the best and worth remembering. Veronica Manes - March 30th, 2004 at 11:20am Nicole C. - Maplewood has changed This is in response to Nicole C. She said she was Homesick and wanted to go back to Maplewood. My experience is that you can never really go back, even if you do go back, you can't recapture your youth and your childhood memories. Memories are a great thing to look back on, but to be honest with you, I don't think it is very healthy to look back, but instead one should look forward and carve out new memories, because no matter how much you want it to be like when you grew up, the reality is, the town has changed a lot since the 70's and 80's when I grew up. Just a thought, Chris. Chris Townsend - March 26th, 2004 at 08:01pm Ricalton family in Maplewood As I have been researching my great-grandfather, James A. Ricalton, I have of course read much about Maplewood and I look forward to visiting there sometime in the near future. James moved to Maplewood with his family, in 1871, to work as a teacher at the school at Jefferson Village . He continued to teach in Maplewood for the next 20 years, except for a year long leave of absence to work for Thomas Edison. His daughter Elizabeth was also a long time teacher in Maplewood, from about 1889-1912. Even after his teaching years, James Ricalton and his family continued to live in Maplewood, at 644 Valley Street, while he was employed as a photographer, writer and world traveler for the Underwood & Underwood Company. He and his second wife, Barbara, left Maplewood in 1924 to return to upstate NY. I would enjoy hearing from anyone who has information or knowledge about the Ricalton family. If anyone has suggestions about how to find further information about some of James' children, I would appreciate this as well. There were a set of twin boys, Charles and Thomas, born in 1873 to James and his first wife Christina. I have no further info about them, except their dates of death; Charles in 1908 and Thomas in 1915. I suspect one of them may have married a Lotta Crawford. I look forward to visiting your lovely town; seeing the mural depicting Ricalton, strolling around Ricalton Square and walking down Valley Street. Does the house still remain at 644 Valley Street? As a bonus, I have a college roomate (who I haven't seen since my wedding in 1988), who now lives in Maplewood. Suggestions of things to include on my visit are welcome. Thanks! Please email any info. Susan Ricalton Sanders - March 26th, 2004 at 09:14am Two Slices and a Large Coke! Hello, my name is Chris Townsend, and I grew up in Maplewood from 1973-1989. I am 30 now and living in the Seattle, Wa area since 1992, working in Computer field. I really enjoyed growing up in Maplewood, and have a lot of great memories, going to the pool, going to Roman Gourmet, Baskin Robbins, Mischief Night, and I was a hellraising kid too! Just a really really good time, but the truth is, you can't go back home. Robert Frost said, "You can never go back home." this is true. My brother Mark still lives in Maplewood, and I visit him now and then, but after living on the West Coast for so long, it's like night and day. So many car honkers there and just a way faster paced lifestyle. Very laid back here, however it does rain alot. I was a very active kid in Maplewood growing up. I played soccer on the Cougar Traveling team, the Tornadoes, grade 6-8, and played soccer and wrestled at CHS for 2 years, before moving to Hilton Head Is, SC to finish school, and then moved to WA with parents in 92, grad from University of Washington in 1997. Some of my precious memories of my childhood were going to the town Pool and hittin the snack bar, mmmm those greasy fries were good. Also, when it rained at the Pool, all of us kids would build forts out of the wooden chairs and towels, we were in our own little world. Also, I remember it being very hot in summer and we would have AC units in our rooms. No one out here has AC, you don't need it, doesn't get humid. Anyway, a part of me misses Maplewood, and it was a great town to grow up in. Email me if you wish... Chris Townsend Chris Townsend - March 26th, 2004 at 02:37am Maplewood Never Leaves Us! I just stumbled across this website, and saw a note from Ray Gefken. Ray, I remember those experimental flights of yours in what became Orchard Park, but started out as what seemed like a wilderness to a little kid, and was colloquially called " The Gefken Lots." You were always flying something-sometimes rockets. I tried my hand at a few planes but they always crashed. I also remember riding on a model A Ford -down St. Lawrence and over Kendall Ave.-(at night) that had been stripped of its body and everyting else-just frame, engine, tires, steering. No lights. Flame roaring out of the exhaust manifold. We sat on a mattress. Where were the cops? You were right about "Maplewood Never Leaves Us." I rediscovered it a couple of years ago when I ran a race in Millburn and spent a little time in Mplwd. Saw your old Florist Shop/House, and I remembered when horses used to be used in the Spring to plough up the ground in back there. What a beautiful town! While I'm at it-Hello to the CHS class of '57! Does anyone run 5k's? At first when I moved here, I wasn't so sure I'd find my place, but in time i did and made so many friends, had so much fun and history here. I even miss the scary times when Mr. Gaines had those evil SS tests. And physical ed, having to climb that pole in the field.I miss every memory I have there, and being stuck out in Maryland is driving me crazy. I'll be home soon though. See you soon Jersey!! Nichole C. - March 1st, 2004 at 09:27am In Memory of Danuta Lichnowski I just want to remember my best friend Danuta Lichnowski who passed away in 1987. I'd appreciate any information. Thanks. Ron Bishop - February 27th, 2004 at 06:17pm I loved Maplewood Wow!! I can't believe I found this site. It's been here all along. I moved to Maplewood when I was in 4th grade. Tuscan school 1979/80. We lived on 32 Sommer Street. We were there only a few years. In early 8th grade we moved overseas. I still think of that house as mine. And for years and years I thought I would come back to Maplewood. Not that I'm far now. Most of my fondest memories are in Maplewood. There were so many kids on my street. We would play all day, we didn't need camp in the summer!! Ali, Trish, Ray, Kevin, Joe, Joe, Nathan, Mike, Victor and his little brother Danny. And many more that lived on the streets around us. It was so much fun. I've since been back quite a few times to visit with old middle school friends. Justine, Joy. One of the few people I haven't heard from, but would love to, is "Billy" Bill now a days (initials C.W.T.). Actually, I do remember visiting with him before we were out of HS. He had moved away too. That had to be at least 15 years ago. The Village, cutting through the golf course, walking home in the brook. And the Maplewood Pool!! God I loved it. Veronica Manes - February 26th, 2004 at 11:52pm Greetings / Memories Just discovered the site, and floods of old, fun, fond memories have been coming back. In 1964, we moved to a cool house: 25 Tuscan Rd (between Prospect St and Valley St, right across the street from the back of Tuscan school). I entered in the middle of 2nd grade, and still think that Mrs Colineri was one of the best teachers I've ever had (anyone have any idea where she might be?) Graduated Tuscan in 69, went to MJH (got involved in a band called the "Sound Barrier" that played in the 1972 Mplwd 4th of July celebration at Memorial Park). CHS, 1975, played on the Ultimate Frisbee team (Ultimate was invented at CHS, and so is world famous in that regards). Memorial/Maplecrest Parks, "the reservation", Grunings on the Hill, "the Village", what a fantastic place to grow up. Hello to anyone who might know me!
