Well it seems you all are gonna have a white Xmas this year. Bet its a pain but real pretty, Do they allow the kids to still sled down the hill on the golf course? Is the skating pond frozen over yet? Many nice memories of the Holidays in Maplewood. The Coates thru one heck of a Xmas eve party, many a hangover from an evening there. Happiest of Holidays to you all

I have been coming to Maplewood since 1989 as a house guest of both Mr.Howard WISEMAN and Miss.Harriette STOKES both of whom had been born and lived thruout their lives in small, lovely Maplewood. The reason why I am writing here is just to share the deep sorrow that I felt deep in my heart having just heard that both Howard and Harriette passed away last week.Howard was a great historian and an exceptioanlly noble character.Harriette was an angel with no wings. She was the virtual embodiment of love and divine purity.May God rest both of their souls.

I lived in Maplewood for my first 40 some years; at 15 Park Avenue and from 1968 on at 96 Maplewood Avenue. My mom graduated from CHS in 1928, and my first husband and I in 1957. All five of our children graduated from CHS also!! Since Maplewood, I have lived in Edgartown, Martha's Vineyard and now Camden, Maine. In many ways, my Maplewood time was the most significant time of my life. I just read in the Boston Globe that Michael Small, CHS '57 died. He and Morty Barron wrote all the original songs for our Junior Night show, "Up and At 'Em" Mike went on to compose movie scores and had a great talent. I think many of us didn't realize what a great education we got in the local public schools. I went into Nursing and then, in 1972, temporarily , Real Estate. 31 Years and two States later, I'm still loving selling and marketing homes!! Our home address is 91 Mechanic Street, Camden, Maine. If any of you are up this way, please come on by. Mary Ann MacDonald

Well a kind soul filled me in to let me know that Louis Nessi had passed on several years ago as did Ulysis f Kopf, the principal at Jefferson school. God Bless both as they were good people. Remember how Mr Kopf walked? Kind of bounced on his toes, quite like a cat, would sneak up from behind. I got a report that Ms Lamprose finally did get married, way to go Angelina! Thanks to all the educators at the maplewood/south orange school district, you made a difference in alot of peoples lives even tho you may never know.

Hey.
Ever wonder what happened to people like Dr George of Columbia High School and Mr Nesci(?) of Maplewood Junior High? Mr. Nesci was an assistant principal at MJH in the late 60's and 70's, god bless that man, he put up with some ridiculous events. He was my 9th grade english teacher and was a great guy. Anyway, thought it be fun if some folks who knew about whats up with some of the folks shared with the rest of us.
This website is very cool, I can't make it back very often but so it allows me to visit electronically anyway. Hola to all old friends.

Hello Maplewood
I grew up here, 1958 to 1977. Lots of great memories of Jefferson school, I was the last class of Ms. Meyers Kindergarten class. Miss Lamprose is still my favorite teacher. I grew up at 37 Kendal Ave, liked it so much I named my daughter Kendal. Crazy times with King ,Paris, Perna, Shehadi, Crecco. graduated from Columbia(barely) in 1977. Have been back many times since moving out west, but my folks sold the Kendal house and moved to Arizona. My dad Bill passed away this September, he loved the town so much. Would love to hear from any old friends, let me know how your doing. I am fine, married for 18 years to Carrie, one daughter,Kendal, two dogs, two cats, teaching Chemistry in Albuquerque. Hope your all well. With Fondest memories Neil

My mother Bernette Woodward Murphy was born and raised in Maplewood she was a twin she has a brother named Bernerd Woodward she was raised by the O'Briens. My Aunt Jessie Boothby Newman also was raised in the area. I can remember all of the trips to Maine there was a old store that had a circular drive, as a kid I remember going to the little store for candy and the man in the store would always give me a Hershey bar. I also remember a bell across from the little store. My Aunt live kitty corner from the store in a big white farm house. I would love to know if the house and the little store are still there? Found out about this sound from classmates.com, I grew up on Lennox Ave in SO, went to SOJH and I would have gone to CHS class of 1980, but we moved when I was 15, which was just about the worse thing that has ever happened to me. I loved growing up in SO/Maplewood lots, of memories of Baskin Robbins and the movie theater and pizza place; I moved to a suburb outside Philly (Cherry Hill), full of snobs and you couldn't walk anywhere! No more center of town, kids hung out at the "mall"...god help us. Hope it is still as cool as I remember up there, I will have to visit, but I lost touch with all my old friends. Looking for Debbie Larkin, Debbie Adams, Maryanne Koper, Stephanie Cohen - all from Maplewood, and Stacy Kass from SO. IF anyone can help, please email me.

Hello Maplewood Residents,
My husband and I currently live in London but are planning a trip to investigate moving to New Jersey. Maplewood is one of the communities we're interested in, and I was wondering if someone could help me with finding a hotel/bed & breakfast in the area when we come to visit to check out the town. I've been on several websites but I cant seem to find any place except the hotels by Newark airport. We would rather stay in a small community to get a feel of the small town flavor & charm. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Recently, Maplewood lost two great guys from the Columbia High School Class of 1981. Kevin Bianchi and Dan Daly had become great fathers to their children when they both passed away at the age of 40. Kevin was a standout wrestler for CHS and became a Commander in the Navy for a helicopter wing in Sicily. Dan pitched for CHS and battled Hodgkins Disease three times beginning in 1980 and beat his cancer. Both of these guys were always smiling. If anyone has a story about either Kevin or Dan, why not share it with everyone else?

Why is it that you don't realize how great something was until its not there any more?

I moved to Maplewood in '76 and attended Seth Boyden, MJHS and graduated Columbia in '83. As graduation approached, we all had lofty goals of getting out of smalltown, USA and moving on to someplace better.

Well, I've seen quite a bit of this country, and though many places may seem "bigger", or "newer", most lack the charm that maplewood had. When it came to to settling down on Long Island, due to work, I found myself searching for all the qualities and beauty that Maplewood possessed. I now live in a very small village and I tell people that it is similar to Maplewood in many ways, but I've come to realize what it's missing. Maplewood was "planned". It was "balanced". There was thought that went into it's layout, providing plenty of areas for recreation and exploration and activities. There was room to move and plenty of things to do.

I've been out of high school for 20 years and all my family has since moved on. It is not that often that I pass through and I don't know how things are today, as compared to 20 years ago. But it still looks very much the same and I hope it is, for the sake of those growing up there today. Cherish your days in that wonderful community for you will one day look back on it and realize how special it was.

I cant remember the last time I visited this site, but since then I have been pleasently surprised by several emails from old friends. Raised on Plymouth ave, about a block from Maplecrest Park, I attended Tuscan until 1969 and then MJH, until my family moved me in 71. Last summer I went back to 99 plymouth and knocked on the door. I wanted so badly to go inside. NOONE ANSWERED. Ill have to try again sometime. Was Maplewood really special, or are all places of youth special. It is hard to know for sure. Without a doubt I enjoyed all my years there and still think about it often.

Hi! I’m Abby! (Abigayle Karina Larrier to be exact) Thats me in the picture. Sorry for the dribble, but I’m not even 7 months old.... Me, Mommy (Sherina), and Daddy (Bennie) have bought 47 Jefferson Street (Daddy says we close on the house today Monday July 21). We moving from Brooklyn NY where we own a pretty brownstone. We are very excited about moving into the neighborhood. I have lawn to run around on, and lots of stairs I can learn how to walk up and down! Lets talk some more about me and my family. I was born Dec 24, 2003. That’s right XMAS eve. Daddy says I will only get one set of present because my birthday and XMAS are the same time :( Actually he doesn’t say it anymore because Mommy hit him on the head with the newspaper the last time he said it. He also calls me his little tax deduction. I don’t know what that means. It must be good, because he kisses me and smiles everytime he says it. I’m unemployed, but Mommy and Daddy both work in NYC for JPMorgan Chase. Mommy was born on .... (Sorry, mommy says nobody needs to know), and Daddy , well I better quit while I’m ahead. Daddy wanted me to tell you we are having some work done on the house over the next month. Scotts’s Roofing (973 417 0019) is giving us a new roof, and Rutgers (973 763 1670) is painting the outside of the house (pink with red polka dots... just kidding..., tan and a light olive. (Daddy says he consulted with local historian for the colors) If any of their work effects you or your property, let my Daddy know (917 817 4904) or either company directly. We will not be moving in until all the work is done (end of August) , but you will see us most weekends as we start to move some of our things in. See you around the neighborhood! Maplewood never leaves us!! While selling plants at a local Flea market here in VA a couple mentioned they were fr. NJ. They were the Shusters of Collinwood rd who used to come into my shop for Easter corsages(Gefken Flowers). Here they were buying from me on Palm Sunday. Talk about De-ja vu!! I just read the note from Don Sachs about Leonards hobby shop on Valley st? If that was the same one, I also absorbed every model he stocked and from the hobby developed a love of flying which led to my pilots certificate. After years of flying I still remember fondly those first fumbling rubber band flights in the park or wherever I could find sufficient space. If any of you Maplewoodians fly, Stop in at ACCOMACK COUNTY AIRPORT (MFV), where I am a flight service attendant(part time), and Say Hi. Ray Gefken, happily retired but fondly remembering Maplewood.

Leonard, I knew your parents when I lived in Maplewood (1951-59). Your father sold me my first model airplane stuff-I still fly models today. I lived at 44 Oberlin St., and I really miss the old Maplewood. In 1998 my company (Arizona Public Service) sent me to Italy to oversee the construction of some large steam generators for our nuclear power plant in AZ. These things are *really* big, and I'll be here for about 3+ more years-love it!

My husband received a job in newark, new jersey. Currently we are looking for a place to stay in surrounding areas. Maplewood was suggested to us as a nice place to relocate (from Louisiana). Now we are doing our homework (research) and are really considering residing in maplewood. I, the wife, ran across this website and decide to look in. I am very pleased with what i have found about maplewood and south orange. Not to mention that I also got a chance to talk to a very friendly lady by the name of Barbara at 1800 close by, who also informed me that this town give tours. What more can you ask for. I am Helen M. Grollmusz, we lived in Union, but were in St.Joseph's Parish in Maplewood. Father Bernard was Pastor at that time. I was the Girl Scout Leader for Brownie Troop 1074. This was in 1959 until 1965. Then the Highway took our house on Alpine Ave. Moving and House hunting took up my time and I lost touch with everyone in St.Joseph's. I have often thought about the girls in our troop and the Co/Leader's. My Daughter is Bonnie Lee (Grollmusz) Meltzer. My husband and I retired to Florida seven years ago. We had a great group of girl's and I think fondly of them all. If this sounds familiar, I would love to hear from you.

January 1974 over 80 Maplewoodian volunteers began serving the Township of Maplewood as the Maplewood First Aid Squad. As a former member in those early years, I wonder from time to time if any of the orginal squad members are still around. I know of many who have becomed physicians, nurses & active in the para-medical field. It's amazing that almost 30 years have pasted since those early times. I realize that things have changed, but it's still nice to remember Maplewood and those good old days. Steve Kaufmann

I believe he had the same route for most all of those years. He spoke very highly of the people on his route and most of them he considered his friends. He loved to tell about when it was very cold and snowy the housewives would invite him in for a cup of coffee and to get warm or a glass of lemonade in the summer. Dad passed away in 1977. Probably most of the adults have passed on also but perhaps some of their children still live there and remember him. I would love to hear from you.

What a nice site! My great-grandparents (Mr. and Mrs. William H. Barkhorn) lived in Maplewood and my mom always told great stories about visiting them at their home. My mom grew up in South Orange and went to Columbia High School for 2 years (1934 and 35). She lived right across the street from the high school and never forgave her parents for sending her to Miss Beard's school for her junior and senior year! She always said that Columbia was the best high school in the nation! One last thought: I miss Grunings!!!!!!!!!! It was the best hot fudge and ice cream ever!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Just discovered your website & what a thrill. Lived in Maplewood from 1932 until marriage in '59. Mom resided there until passing in '94 at which time we sold the house located at 48 Midland Blvd. Went to Clinton School, SOJH (the old building) & Columbia H.S. (Class of '46). presently live in Union and whenever convenient ride through Maplewood recalling old times. Who can forget July 4th festivities; Grunings; Maplewood, Cameo & Sanford theaters. And of course Olympic Park (where I learned to swim). How about sleighriding down Highland Ave or going to the old Ward Estate. Attended several Class Reunions meeting old friends & recalling the "good old days". Best wishes to all Columbia Alumni.

Hi, I found a boyscout handbook dated 1959 at a flea market that once belonged to a Maplewood resident, John Menke. Apparently, he was an Eagle Scout. Does he still live in Maplewood? Jon

I "grew up" (more or less) at 141 Connett Place in South Orange. My family lived there from 1951 until 1967. I would love to make contact with the current residents at that address. Like many, I fondly recall the gaslights, spectacular fireworks displays and, yes, the "Good Humor" truck at Cameron Field. Summers were spent at the pool at Cameron Field and winters on "Flood's Hill". While attending Marshall School, SOJH (I was in the first freshman class to use the new building in 1957) and Columbia High, it never occurred to me just how excellent the school system was. By all accounts, that has sadly come to an end. Following a visit to the SO-M area (two years ago), I decided to freeze my recollection of my home town... somewhere back in the early sixties. Without a doubt, "you cannot go home" - because nothing remains static; as it was. My visit, however, left me with the impression of having witnessed a recent battleground. It further seemed that the battle continues. So sad. Bud Fischer

i lived in maplewood most of my child and teenage years on hilton ave. i remember walking to st.joseph's catholic school, then moving on to maplewood junior high and then columbia high where i graduated in 1976.it seemed like such a long walk but i do remember the beautiful homes along the way. i would give anything to be able to return to those times again. i wonder if it is still safe to walk like that and not worry about anything? i live in tennessee now, which is a nice place to live but nowhere close to the beauty of my old town.if anyone remembers me or wants to get in touch please do so. it could be a trip back again!

I am helping a friends piece together his genealogy and 've been able to track some of his "cousins" to the Maplewood area. I believe some may still be there. We are looking for the daughter of Ruth Florence (Kraft) Gotsch. I believe she is living in the homestead, has a brother Charles, Jr. and a brother, Henry. My friend found an old photograph over the weekend (looking through the grandmother's stuff) of what appears to be a wedding picture with the names: Ruth and Charles Gotsch, SR. Then there appears the name Irene with indication that Irene married Charles Fuhrmeister, III. Any help will be appreciated.
