Blessing of the Animals

We are planning a "Blessing of the Animals" at Prospect Presbyterian Church in Maplewood on October 4, and we’d really love to use it as an opportunity to help animals in our community, too. We’re thinking about collecting pet supplies and having people make simple fleece dog toys that we can donate. An initial thought was AHS in Newark, but before we decide anything, we wanted to ask here — is there a local shelter, rescue, foster organization, or specific person you think we should connect with? We’d love to find somewhere in or close to SOMA if there’s a need, and ideally get an actual wish list so we’re collecting things that will genuinely be useful. And if anyone here is connected with an organization that might want to partner with us for this, please DM me so I can put you in touch with the planners for that event!

Basically: we have a church full of people who want to love on some animals.

Help us put them to work!

Also, we invite any and all pets and their human family members to join us that afternoon. More details to come on that.

I reached out and said my rescue, Morgan Le Fay Cat Rescue, would be happy to work with them. I offered to help with any project, as a former art teacher.

I also suggested organizing an adoption event and I'm waiting for a response.

As for my own projects, I'm currently building feral cat shelters to donate to other local rescues. My first project is making 30 houses for a rescue who feeds over 15 colonies in Newatk. I also work closely with East Orange rescues. I'm based in South Orange and have been a rescue for 25 years and a 501C3 for 15.

I'm currently doing Trap Neuter Return in South Orange and feeding a colony.

I recently met with Mayor Collum asking for a small recovery space for local cats that I TNR but none was available.

I also asked if $5.000 could be set aside for the town to help cover spay/neuter surgery for community cats but was told it was not in the budget.

I'm still doing TNVR.

Tomorrow I'm volunteering with a TNVR group on a 100 cat hoarding rescue. I've done 2 in South Orange and one before that.

Very hopeful that this event will move people to demand another shelter in SOMA.

Our residents are finding dead and dying kittens.
