- Multiple rounds of heavy showers and thunderstorms from this afternoon into Monday night are likely to leave significant total rainfall of 2 to 4 inches, with locally higher amounts. Hourly rainfall amounts up to 2 inches may be possible. These conditions could lead to flash flooding.

The NWS has issued a Flood Watch and an Air Quality alert. I posted the Flood Watch separately a few minutes ago. The Air Quality alert is specifically for high levels of ozone generated by the heat
For today, expect showers all day but especially in the evening and overnight. Chance of thunderstorms. With any thunderstorms that develop, the hazard will more likely be periods of heavy rain rather than the high winds experienced previously.
Winds could be gusty, especially in thunderstorms, but there is little chance of a repeat of recent high winds
Monday and Tuesday are similarly placed, with showers and possibly thunderstorms, especially in the afternoon. Heavy rain is possible, especially Monday afternoon, and gusty but more moderate winds
There is the potential in these storms of rainfall rates of 1-2 inches per hour, and an unlikely but non-zero chance of brief periodsof 4-5 inches per hour. Should we see these heavy downpours, local streams and rivers may be overwhelmed and flood
This morning would be a good time to check the storm drains in your street and clear any debris from them
Temps today top out in the mid 80⁰s today and in the upper 70⁰s Monday and Tuesday

I heard an interesting point on the radio yesterday about lowering demand on the grid. The end of the working day is often peak demand because people come home from work, crank the AC and use other appliances. Along with using a timer to do things like start your dishwasher in the wee hours, they were also suggesting if you have an EV to hold off on recharging til later in the evening.
I don’t know if the residential EV chargers have a timer function built in, or if it’s in the car software. It would make a lot of sense because wattage gets cheaper in the middle of the night.
Speaking of EVs and charging, we had a transformer fail on our little street. It then fails the next day due to the replacement fuse not being the right one to handle the load. Our one-block street has 11 Teslas and 3 other EVs that I know of. I walk several dogs on the street so it’s just something one gets used to. Anyway, here’s this from the JCP&L tech a resident spoke with:
Update: We have a new transformer from last night but the wrong fuse was installed. They said that should help a lot. 🤞
The only recommendation they made is to reduce Tesla charging. They said that takes the most strain. On a normal day not an issue, but w the heat and AC running the electric car charging has the most output. 🤷♂️

Mild and dryer today, then a few summer days and a first look at the weekend. All watches and warnings have ended

Wednesday likely to be the nicest day all week, mostly sunny, a bit humid, high mid 80⁰s, low overnight mid 60⁰s
Thursday clouds star rolling in, warmer, high upper 80⁰s, chance of showers or a thunderstorm in the afternoon, low 70⁰s
Friday starts out mostly sunny then chance thunderstorms, high near 90⁰, low near 70⁰
Weekend still uncertain with a Canadian front that could bring showers or it could stay in Canada in which case we could see mostly sunny skies and temps in the 90⁰s

Forecast mostly on track for a warm day today with a chance of afternoon showers and a slight chance of an afternoon thunderstorm. High upper 80⁰s
For Maplewoodstock weekend, we now have a slight chance of a shower or thunderstorm Saturday afternoon, temps in the low to mid 80⁰s. Still looks like an excellent day Sunday, with a few clouds and highs in the low 80⁰s

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
A Heat Advisory is issued when the combination of heat and humidity is expected to make it feel like it is 95 to 99 degrees for two or more consecutive days, or 100 to 104 degrees for any length of time.
Seniors and those with chronic health problems or mental health conditions are at an increased risk. Homes without air conditioning can be much hotter than outdoor temperatures.
Use air conditioning to stay cool at home or go to a place that has air conditioning. If you don`t have home air conditioning, continue to seek out cool spaces each day as long as it remains hot, and for a few days after if your home is still hot. Check on vulnerable friends, family members and neighbors.
To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! In cases of heat stroke call 9 1 1.

Monday July 13th
Heat Advisory midweek.
The NWS has issued a Heat Advisory for tomorrow and Wednesday, details in comments
Today we get one more day of this lovely summer weather with a high in the mid 80⁰s and low humidity. A few clouds decorate the sky. Overnight low upper 60⁰s
Tomorrow, hot. Mostly clear skies and sunny with highs likely in the mid 90⁰s. Not too humid (for New Jersey) but still expect a heat index near 100⁰. At least we can expect a breeze in the afternoon. Low overnight in the mid 70⁰s
Wednesday much the same but more so, with temps reaching the upper 90⁰s and a heat index over 100⁰ likely. Might see a shower in the afternoon, overnight low lower 70⁰s
Back end of the week should be a bit better with lots of sun and highs in the lower 90⁰s Thursday and Friday. Still looks like little relief at night with forecast lows only getting down to the lower 70⁰s. Might see a shower or three but timing is uncertain
From here the weekend is looking warm with possibly some thunderstorms in the afternoon both days

Heat Advisory continues today
Today, mostly sunny and very hot, with a high in the 90⁰s or low 100⁰s. Very slight chance of a thunderstorm late afternoon. Also this afternoon we could see Canadian wildfire smoke mixing in so might get some haze and an Air Quality Alert. Overnight low mid 70⁰s
Thursday not quite as hot but still highs will be in the mid 90⁰s, with mixed sun and clouds likely. Thunderstorm possible in the afternoon. More Canadian wildfire smoke could mix down to the surface and also cause upper level haze. Breezy. Low lower 70⁰s
Friday much the same, high near 90⁰, mostly sunny, chance smoke, possible thunderstorm, low around 70⁰
Saturday could be rainy, high mid 80⁰s, Sunday looking nicer from here, sunny, mid 80⁰s

Smoke from Canadian wildfires continues to drift into our area today causing high particulate readings, especially this afternoon
The air quality is scary high but not much better in Philly and the Mets and Phils seem to be playing without distress.

Air Quality Alert continues for smoke today, index is red already at 7:00am and is forecast to be even higher this afternoon. Hazardous conditions may persist into Saturday morning.
High today upper 80⁰s, overnight low upper 60⁰s
Saturday rain likely. Chance of showers in the morning becomes likely showers and chance thunderstorms, breezy (especially should there be thunderstorms) high low 80⁰s low around 70⁰

Smoke in the morning and storms in the afternoon
We are again under an Air Quality Alert as the smoke returns this morning. Haze overspread the area and the AQI was already at 155/unhealthy at 6am and rising
Later today a front moves through and while it should help clear the smoke it is likely to also bring instability and about two inches of precipitable water (PWAT). That means likely thunderstorms. While it is not possible to predict the exact location and track until shortly before the storm hits, the potential is widespread and where they do pass, heavy rain and strong wind gusts are possible, so the NWS has issued a Flood Watch

Based on this, and reports from 2 local (1 in SO, 1 in Maplewood) WU stations, we received more rainfall here yesterday than almost anyone else.

Yes we were unluckily in the path of the most severe cell. I measured 2.42 inches

The NWS has issued a Flash Flood Watch for our area from 8am to 2am Wednesday
We are seeing showers and thunderstorms starting to develop south and west of the area this morning. The potential for heavy, rain and gusting winds exist with these storms which are likely today, especially (but not exclusively) this afternoon and evening
A Flood Watch means conditions exist that could lead to heavy rainfall and possibly flooding. A Flood Warning would be issued if such a storm were imminent

There is a strong circulation associated with a tornado warning directly over Morristown at this moment. No indication that a tornado is actually on the ground but one could form at any time. Maplewood not directly in the path but could be a close shave if the storm turns a little south.
