Restaurants that allow dogs

Aug 1, 2026 at 9:06am

Are there restaurants in our area, or nearby areas, that allow you to bring your dogs along and sit by your side during meals? I recall a bar (I think I read about) in the West Orange area that has outdoor seating and allows you to bring your dogs (on a leash of course) with you.

Any suggestions?

A dog inside a restaurant?  I'm out of there.

Most restaurants that have outdoor seating will allow your dog to sit with you. Some that we’ve brought our dog to include St.James Gate, Village Coffee, Millburn Standard, Summit Diner, Committed Pig, The Order, and a bunch of places in Montclair, too. We’ve seen a dog inside at a popular shore restaurant, too. We ate there yesterday but sat outside with our pup. I won’t name the establishment since clearly this is a divisive subject.

May I ask if this includes assistance (service) dogs?  They’re trained in how to behave around food and lots of strangers, they’re trained in how to behave in crowded spaces…

I think the ADA requires cafes and restaurants to allow entry to all accredited assistance dogs.

It is illegal to prohibit service animals from public premises.  Caveat (big, new word for me)  there is little documentation about what constitutes a service animal. The most ambiguous category is "comfort" animal.

FJJ, thank you for your reply.  I know there’s a formal training process, wherein  after the dogs pass, the owners are presented with accreditation papers.  And the dogs are meant to wear a clearly labelled vest to distinguish them from pets.  (I have a dim memory of JTA once writing about this)

This is a fascinating read:  https://usserviceanimalregistrar.org/service-dog-training-requirements/

what? - - how on earth could you make that assumption....that would violate every health code imaginable....I was simply asking where I could take my dog and COMFORTABLY have lunch outside at a restaurant where it would be easily acceptable

Your first post is ambiguous. It could mean a dog indoors or outdoors at a restaurant.

Saw a brilliant A-frame sign at Bistro 19 yesterday:

“Dogs welcome.

Humans tolerated.”

😆😆😆
